Current Activities

Mr. Figueroa describes a number of activities that he enjoys pursuing. They include:

Leisure

Dancing: Mr. Figueroa enjoys all types of dancing. He goes to dances most often with friends, since his wife’s condition does not enable her to participate.

Pool: Mr. Figueroa enjoys playing pool. He indicates that he used to participate in pool tournaments, but now feels his physical ability has diminished so that he is not as good as he once was. He now plays exclusively for enjoyment. Watching him play, it is clear that he is very good. He has the physical mobility to reach far across the table, a very steady hand on the pool cue, and excellent eye-hand coordination. This coordination, combined with his cognitive abilities in space visualization and geometry, enable him to determine the best shots in a variety of situations.

Dominoes: Mr. Figueroa enjoys playing dominoes. He plays regularly at the Hispanic Senior Center, and also travels with friends to domino tournaments at various locations around the country. Many of these are within a day’s drive, but he does occasionally fly to tournaments.
Sports: Mr. Figueroa enjoys watching sporting events, either in person (rare) or on television (frequent).

Movies: His main leisure activity with his wife, other than watching TV at home, is going to the movies. Mr. Figueroa seems to do this mostly to please his wife, as he indicates that he’d be just as happy watching TV at home. However, he recognizes that his wife’s medical conditions (unspecified during the interview) limit her ability to participate in other activities he enjoys, and he does appear to like spending time with her.

Work

Mr. Figueroa neither works for pay nor volunteers (although he likes helping his friends and neighbors). Until recently, he drove the van for the Hispanic Senior Center, but he stopped doing this because of his concerns about the responsibility. He has no particular interest in returning to work, nor does he perceive any financial necessity for doing so.

Self-Care

Mr. Figueroa is able to cook, but his wife does most of this. They have relatively traditional gender roles. He manages all his personal care, she cooks and cleans, he takes care of the finances and maintenance of the house and yard. This includes orchestrating outside help when needed, for example, calling the plumber. Shopping is shared—he often drives his wife to the store. He seems to enjoy these activities and to be able to do them without difficulty.

Other important activities

Mr. Figueroa indicates that he is Catholic. He attends church on a somewhat regular basis (approximately twice a month), but religion does not figure prominently in his typical activities. Keep in mind that it is possible to be quite spiritual without participating regularly in organized religious activities. Mr. Figueroa's religious beliefs clearly influence him strongly.
Mr. Figueroa does not mention his sexual relationship with his wife. Given her illness, this is something about which you might want to inquire further, since her physical status might affect this activity. Keep in mind that although it is a sensitive topic, for many older adults it is an important activity, but one that is often limited because of physical status.
