Common sensory disorders

Macular degeneration

Macular degeneration is a condition of unknown origin that causes vision loss in the center of the field of vision. While individuals with macular degeneration retain some degree of peripheral vision, over time a black spot in the center of the visual field grows in size. This results in loss of ability to drive, to read, to watch TV or movies, and other common daily activities. While some degree of mobility is retained because of residual peripheral vision, intervention to support meaningful activities in spite of vision loss is essential. Cataracts

Cataracts are very common in elders. They represent a gradual "fogging" of the lens of the eye. Vision becomes clouded so that eventually daily activities are limited. Cataracts can be removed surgically, and the lens replaced with glasses or a lens implant directly in the eye. Click here to go back to health conditions.
