Removing clutter

Older adults whose homes are full of knick-knacks and other clutter may not have clear passage from room to room. Removing some of the clutter can help minimize tripping. Keep in mind, though, that some objects can be helpful to older adults moving from room to room. A strategically placed chair may provide a hand-hold. A table may, through habit, provide a visual clue to the path from one room to another. Don't remove clutter until you've watched the individual move through the house.
