OT and PT in environmental design

There are growing opportunities in making environmental modifications, although funding for these efforts is still a bit of a challenge. Some architects now hire occupational therapists to help them design buildings that comply with conditions in the Americans with Disabilities Act. Occupational therapists understand what kinds of physical therapists can have valuable input about mobility issues. Understanding how an individual uses a wheelchair, or what kinds of limitations are imposed by a walker can enhance planning for environmental modifications. Similarly, physical therapists can advise regarding normal age-related changes in mobility that can affect function. Some urban planners, likewise, consult with both occupational and phyiscal therapists or psychologists to determine how best to plan the environment (for one example, larger street signs can help not only older adults but also visitors to a city).
