Social and Family History

Mrs. Jackson was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She is the oldest of eight siblings; she is the sole remaining survivor. She married twice, but has outlived both husbands. As she says, she "killed both of them." She had only one son, and he died some time ago. Before his death, he taught at a community college. Mrs. Jackson moved to Cleveland long ago with a friend. All the rest of her family remained in Memphis, although she now has a niece living nearby. She has five other nieces and nephews who live further away (Memphis, Chicago, and California).

When she first arrived in Cleveland, she lived with her friend on the near east side. She remained with her friend until three years ago, at which time she moved to Eliza Bryant Manor. Her niece visits frequently and brings groceries and other items Mrs. Jackson needs or wants. A cousin and her husband who live in Cleveland occasionally take Mrs. Jackson out to eat.

Mrs. Jackson indicates that at Eliza Bryant she occasionally spends time with a neighbor. She indicates that otherwise she spends most of her time in her apartment and not with others. However, she does join others for some of the activities sponsored by Eliza Bryant, and she was observed sitting in a lounge area joking and chatting with other residents. She certainly gives no indication of being lonely.
