Functional Independence Measure (FIM)

The FIM is the most widely used instrument in rehabilitation. It includes 18 items rated on ordinal scales. The FIM does require that individuals administering it be trained. This is a disadvantage; however, because it is so widely used it is well validated and norms for an array of populations are available. In the case of Mrs. Jackson, it might not be warranted now, but might be if she becomes more debilitated in the future. The FIM can be administered by any member of a treatment team.
