Feelings about death and dying
Mrs. Jackson is 93 years old. She may well live to be quite a bit older, but she will need to face the prospect of her death. For many African-Americans, great solace is found in religious beliefs. These beliefs may help stave off fear of the inevitable by promising future life in the hereafter. Family solidarity is also important for some African-Americans as they face death. The former consolation is available to Mrs. Jackson; it is not clear whether her relationship with extended family is sufficiently close to provide added support.
