view related videoMrs. Phillips was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is the third oldest of eight siblings. All of her siblings are still alive, four still living in New Orleans, three in Chicago. As Mrs. Phillips says, her family are “long-livers.” 

Mrs. Phillips married while still living in New Orleans. Her husband was originally from Pennsylvania, and they came to Cleveland seeking work. Mr. Phillips did home renovations, and worked for a time as a long-haul truck driver. He died 30 years ago and she has been a widow since.

view related videoMrs. Phillips has five sons and a daughter. One son lives in Germany; the others live nearby. She has 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom are in the area.

Mrs. Phillips has a large circle of friends. She and her husband used to belong to a social club, and enjoyed going to formal events. While some of her friends still visit, she cannot get out very easily to see them, and indicates that many have died. Her main social interactions now are with her family.
