Spending time with his friendMost of Mr. Bynum’s activities are solitary. He does not spend a great deal of time with his family, but he does talk about two friends: Ray, who convinced him to move to Eliza Bryant, and Charlie, with whom he will occasionally go fishing. He says he doesn’t like socializing with other residents because “they are big liars,” but at the time of the interview, it was clear that he had at least a superficially pleasant relationship with many of them.
WorkMr. Bynum neither works for pay nor volunteers. He reports that he does not miss working. Self-CareMr. Bynum cooks both breakfast and dinner in his apartment. He eats lunch in the Eliza Bryant dining room. He also does his own laundry and cleaning and does not report difficulties with any of these activities. He takes pride in being independent in these activities. Other important activitiesMr. Bynum was raised in the Baptist religion. However, he distrusts “preachers” just as he does physicians and lawyers. He says “every preacher wants a Cadillac and a pocket full of money and they get it.” He reports being quite spiritual and says that he talks to “his God” every morning and many evenings.
