Current Activities

Mr. Bynum describes a number of activities that he enjoys doing. They include relaxing and fishing.  Mr. Bynum sometimes gets in his car (he still drives) and goes off by himself to fish.

He listed several other activities that he enjoys, including:

Playing the lottery

Mr. Bynum says he enjoys playing the lottery “for fun.” He has no particular expectation that he will win, and this does not bother him.

Watching television

Mr. Bynum watches nature shows and derives great pleasure from learning about animals. He also enjoys watching football and baseball as he used to play both sports. It seems that at present his physical activity is very limited.

Driving around town

Sometimes Mr. Bynum gets in his car and just drives around.

Spending time with his friend

Most of Mr. Bynum’s activities are solitary. He does not spend a great deal of time with his family, but he does talk about two friends: Ray, who convinced him to move to Eliza Bryant, and Charlie, with whom he will occasionally go fishing. He says he doesn’t like socializing with other residents because “they are big liars,” but at the time of the interview, it was clear that he had at least a superficially pleasant relationship with many of them.

Work

Mr. Bynum neither works for pay nor volunteers. He reports that he does not miss working.

Self-Care

Mr. Bynum cooks both breakfast and dinner in his apartment. He eats lunch in the Eliza Bryant dining room. He also does his own laundry and cleaning and does not report difficulties with any of these activities. He takes pride in being independent in these activities.

Other important activities

Mr. Bynum was raised in the Baptist religion.  However, he distrusts “preachers” just as he does physicians and lawyers. He says “every preacher wants a Cadillac and a pocket full of money and they get it.” He reports being quite spiritual and says that he talks to “his God” every morning and many evenings.
