READING USING THE ELECTRONIC RESERVE
In this course you are asked to purchase very little in the way of course texts. This does not mean that you can expect to read very little. Reading and preparing for class in advance of class is a major responsibility of all students. If you do not take this responsibility very serious you will be unable to engage in this class as "participant learners.' (see the Discussion on "Power in the Classroom" below).
Most of the reading in this course is on the electronic reserve. It will be very easy for you to access this information if you have access to a computer (privately or in a campus lab). You will need to have a computer, however, on which Adobe Acrobat Reader software has been installed. If you need this program click below, or purchase the public access program package WIAP from the Information and Technology Services Division of the University (11th Floor, Rhodes Tower).
Once you install Adobe you can simply click on any hypertext for a reading assignment and it will open a consent screen. You must consent to the terms. It will then open a screen with the text. You can download this file for your personal use, print it, or read it on-line. Reading on-line often requires thaty you sue the little magnifying glass on the toolbar of the program or shift the view to get magnification so that you can read more easily.
Sometimes student have trouble accessing the electronic reserve from off campus. There will be an additional screen, asking you for your ID. You must have a Viking Number (all students do) and it must be set up with the library to be recognized by the computer system. if you do not currently have an active Viking internet access account, get one today so that you can access this course and its readings from off campus.
You can also access the electronic reserve directly through the libraries web page by asking to go to the electronic reserve and then selecting the course HIS 227 or PSC 227 and then finding the appropriate reading from the lsit for that course.
