HIS 227 / PSC 227, POWER AND AUTHORITY
IN NONWESTERN SOCIETIES
SPRING
SEMESTER 2003
ASSIGNMENT FOURTEEN
DUE: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2003
This
in-class exercise will begin with a simple assessment of your initial impressions
of the pair of six-fold screens at the heart of the assigned web exercise.
We will then move on to expand the range and emotional depth of meaning found
in the screens as we gradually become more aware of the wide variety of poetic
associations accumulated over the centuries by the associated twin images
of "tall grasses" and "quail". By the conclusion of the
exercise, you should be increasingly aware of the "soft power" impact
of tradition on the "authority" resident in even modern day Japanese
aesthetic standards.
