WHAT'S NEW on the WEB SITE
The items
listed below have recently been altered in some significant way or
have been added to the site.
- :
The final assignment in the course, Assignment 4,
has been changed. Please print the new version.
- It is no longer
in two parts. The homework due on April 25 will no longer count
as 50% of the paper grade. It will be evaluated as one of the
homework assignments for this section of the course. This is due
to the fact that Dr Charlick found that the assignment was too
difficult for many of the students and did not want to penalize them
on the final paper.
- The newly
formulated essay question for assignment four is found at this link: POWER and
AUTHORITY: PAPER FOUR
- A second day
of introductory material on the practice of medicine among the Hausa
has been added to the third section of the course
schedule with subsequent adjustments in the scheduling of the
fourth part of the course (including the due date for Essay Three,
now listed as Wednesday, April 2, 2003). (Sunday, March 16, 2003)
- Essay
Assignment Three on Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You
and You Fall Down has been uploaded to the course web site. (Tuesday,
March 11, 2003)
- Changes in the
course schedule involving the final two units have been made: "Looking
at the Impact of 'Power' and 'Authority' on the Practice of Medicine"
now begins Friday, March 21, 2003 while "Power,
Authority and Identity in Hausa Culture" starts Monday, March
31, 2003. (Tuesday, March 11, 2003)
- The final three
assignments for March 5th, 7th
and 17th as well as a revamped Masami
Teraoka web assignment page have been added to the web site. (Tuesday,
March 4, 2003)
- Essay
Assignment Two (due Wednesday, March 19, 2003) has been uploaded
to the course web site. (Sunday, March 2, 2003)
- Class assignments
through the end of February and into early March have been added to
the web site. (Tuesday, February 13, 2003)
- To accomodate
the recent disruption in the instructors' access to appropriate classroom
technology, an online version of some of the material scheduled to
be discussed in class has been reformatted so that it can be accessed
over the Internet. A web version of "Some
Moonviewing Poetry" and the accompanying written assignment
for Wednesday, February 19, 2003, have therefore been uploaded to
the course web site for your perusal. (Tuesday, February 13, 2003)
- A reference to
a newly-discovered web article, Keith Giles' '"Nut
in the Shell: Manga Nation" (from the Slush
Factory web site) has been added to the course
schedule for Friday, February 14, 2003. (Friday, Febraury 7, 2003)
- Assignments have
been added to the course material being covered as outlined in the
portion of the course schedule dealing with "POWER"
AND "AUTHORITY" AS A CULTURAL CONSTRUCT IN JAPAN through
Monday,
February 17, 2003.

- The DUE DATE
for Essay Assignment One has been changed from
Wednesday, February 5, 2003 to Monday, February 10, 2003. In connection
with that change, a new assignment for
Wednesday, February 5, 2003 has been added to the course schedule

- An extended explanation
of the use of GET OUT OF HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
FREE coupons has been uploaded to the web site. (Monday, February
3, 2003)
- A revised version
of the reading "Chapter One: Introduction" from T. Fujitani's Splendid
Monarchy: Power and Pagentry in Modern Japan, pp. 1 - 18,
will be available on Electronic Reserve by late on the afternoon of
Monday, February 3, 2003.
NOTE: Late Assignment Seven submissions
will be accepted until 1:30 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2003; coupons
submitted on Friday, January 31, 2003 will be returned for later use
to those students who originally submitted them on that date because
of the problems being experienced with printing out the day’s reading
assignment.

assignment. Also note that this assignment is significantly different
