Words with [ š ] in the Sandoval dictionary

Laura Martin, PhD
Last revision October 2006

Lisandro Sandoval's dictionary records a number of Guatemalan Spanish words that commonly pronounced with the palatal fricative [ š ], which he writes as x, just as it was written in 16th century Spanish. He opens the section on the letter X with a brief essay about the history and distribution of the sound. Other materials at this site deal with various aspects of the issues raised by the presence of this sound and also provide access to a list of [ š ]-words not included by Sandoval. From this page you can access a list of the words included by Sandoval with brief definitions. By clicking on the individual words themselves, you can see additional information about the word, including the full Sandoval definition, definitions from other Guatemalan Spanish dictionaries and the Diccionario de la Real Academia Española (DRAE), etymological hypotheses, and, in some cases, links to other relevant materials. These brief individual word histories are in the process of being supplied, so if you do not see what you are looking for, visit the site again later. Additional information, comments, and suggestions are welcome. Please communicate with the author via the address on the main page of this site.
