Anthropology of Gender Research Project

Fall 2006

The Anthropological study of gender has focused on a number of social principles and processes, including:

• Division of Labor

• Gender Stratification

• Domestic-Public Dichotomy

• Correlations of Sex and Gender Roles

Your project should be a comparative study of one of these, either across cultures or within one culture across time.

You must draw on at least three anthropological scholarly sources for this project, but you must also consult “primary” data in the form of cultural representations of gender such as:

• Films

• Novels

• Plays

• Photographs

• Advertisements

• Catalogues

• “How To” books & articles

• Etiquette manuals

Your research paper or Power Point presentation will consist of 8-10 pages (or the equivalent number of text slides (approximately 20).
