Picture This: The Filmmakers Program @ Cleveland State University

Year 2--Workshops II

March & April 2005

 

What is Picture This? It's a two-year series of activities in support of regional filmmaking education, funded by the President's Initiative Fund program (a partnership of the Cleveland Foundation, the George Gund Foundation and Cleveland State University). Year 2 (2004-2005) includes a series of film education workshops, a short screenplay competition, the development of a filmmakers resource website in collaboration with Greater Cleveland's Film Commission, and the production of the short film, Nora Falls.

Advanced Screenwriting--The Art of Comedy

Guest Instructor Dan O'Shannon

Dan O'Shannon, award-winning writer and producer, served as Executive Producer/Executive Consultant of "Frasier" from 2000 through 2004. Mr. O'Shannon is a native of Northeast Ohio, a past Cleveland State University student, and a former writer for The Cauldron. Working in network television since 1988, he has served as writer or story editor for "Newhart," "Cheers," and "Frasier." His producing credits include "Cheers," "The Boys," "Maggie," and "Frasier." His awards include the Emmy, Golden Globe, Writers Guild Award (2003, for "Frasier"), and an Academy Award nomination for writing the 1998 Disney animated short film, "Redux Riding Hood." Mr. O'Shannon received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and an honorary B.A. in Communication from Cleveland State University in 2003.

Mr. O'Shannon has graciously given of his time over the years by guest lecturing in Communication classes at CSU during his spring hiatus.

Movement and the Film/Video Camera--Shooting the Moving Form: Robert Banks, Lynn Deering, Claude File, & Kimberly Neuendorf

Robert Banks has specialized in avant-garde structuralist filmmaking. His works have been screened at film festivals around the world, winning numerous awards. His 1992 work, X: The Baby Cinema, has garnered international attention. A graduate of the Cleveland School of the Arts, he has taught film courses at Cuyahoga Community College, the Cleveland Institute of Art, and Cleveland State University. He has also worked as a free-lance cinematographer on numerous commercials and music videos.

Lynn Deering is Director of the Dance program at Cleveland State University.

Claude File joined the CSU Drama faculty in 2003. The holder of an M.F.A. from the University of New Orleans, he has over 250 acting and directing credits on stage, film, and television. Claude's professional acting credits include the films Everybody's All-American, The Real McCoy, and The Investigator. In the 1990's Claude owned and operated The Acting Studio in Phoenix, Arizona. He is a member of AFTRA and SAG.

Kimberly Neuendorf (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is a Professor in the Media Arts & Technology Division of the School of Communication at CSU, with an emphasis in teaching film appreciation and history. She is also the producer of numerous educational videos. Her academic research examines film/video content and audience reactions.

 

Beyond Editing--Special Post-Production Techniques: John Ban and numerous guests

John Ban is Digital Video Coordinator for the Digital Video Communication Center in the School of Communication at Cleveland State. He has had more than 25 years of experience in professional video production.

Guest Instructors in this Post-Production Workshop will include: Quan Li, CSU Department of Art Computer Art Specialist,
Kasumi, Cleveland Institute of Art Digital Artist, Al Tuskes, Animator, Mike Soloman, Animator, Steve Kohn, Composer, Tim Beyer, Composer, and other special guests.

 

Screenwriting for the Short film: Konnie Peroune

Konnie Peroune is an Instructor in the School of Communication at Cleveland State University. She holds an M.F.A. in Screenwriting from Columbia University.
