An introduction to the instructors, an overview of the syllabus, the objectives of the course of study, the course web site and the approach to the subject matter of the course plus an extended consideration of basic concepts to be considered during the semester along with two introductory case studies.

Examing how standards of "power" and "authority" gain legitimacy in modern day China derived from the influences of geography, tradition, history, ideology, social institutions, economic policies and political practices.

A case study examining how cultural "power" and "authority" is constructed in Japan and employed both internally and in the international arena.

LOOKING AT THE IMPACT OF "POWER" AND "AUTHORITY" ON EAST ASIAN SOCIETIES 
Monday, May 2, 2005 - Friday, May 6, 2005 
  
Concluding the course of study, an investigation of what the Chinese and Japanese experience of the nature, standards , exercise and imposition of "power" and "authority" can tell us about our own experiences as Americans.
