POWER AND AUTHORITY
IN CHINESE CULTURE

This portion of the course illustrates ways in which geography, tradition, ideology and historical processes in the Chinese context all impact the creation of political and social legitimacy. Ways in which political and social legitimacy might be questioned are also addresssed.

Using class lecture notes and the textbook by Gamer, write an essay identifying (and illustrating) factors that have influenced people's attitudes towards power and authority in China.

Make sure to cite specific examples to illustrate and demonstrate the validity of your points (You may find it particularly profitable to focus on Gamer's chaptesr 1-5, 10, and 12).

The completed essay is due Friday, March 25, 2005.
