HIS 272H,
CULTURAL INTERACTIONS: JAPAN

SHORT ANALYTICAL RESEARCH ESSAY THREE

BE SURE TO KEEP IN MIND THE GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR ANALYTICAL SHORT ESSAYS AS YOU COMPLETE THIS ASSIGNMEN

Describe and discuss one set of related examples of the process by which selected elements of Japanese civilzation and culture were absorbed into European or American life (completely, partially or in adapted form).

Consider as well how this transplanted element of Japanese culture contributred to the advance of Western civilization. Did its amalgamation into European or American culture have any unforeseen consequences? How did this cultural interaction benefit the West? What, if anything, did the Japanese gain from the encounter?

How do your examples embody aspects of Orientalism? ... illustrate Occidentalism at work? ...represent a process of cultural adaptation at work? ... enrich Western aesthetic values? ... impact larger cultural values in general among Europeans and Americans?

SUGGESTED TOPICS TO CONSIDER:

Japonisme and a specific Impressionist artist
Japonisme and the decorative arts
Japonisme and Art Nouveau
Japonisme and the English Arts and Crafts Movement
Japonisme and architecture
