First week (Day One, Day Two, Day Three, Day Four, Day Five)

 

Day One ~ River Valley settlements (Background Info)

 

·         Objectives:

Þ     Students will be able to locate the Tigris, Euphrates, Nile and Huang He Rivers on a map.

Þ     Students will be able to explain what factors are needed for civilizations to develop.

 

·         Classroom Procedures/Activities:

Þ     Begin discussion by asking students to identify basic necessities of life, what do we need to survive? (food, water and shelter)

Þ     Then discuss how the natural resources and landscape of a place can impact whether or not people can settle there.  Some questions to consider are:  Can people grow food there?  Is there an adequate and substantial water source?

Þ     Hand out maps to students (check resource page for possible map), use a map in the textbook, overhead of map or use a wall map of world and point out the location of the Tigris, Euphrates, Nile and Huang He Rivers to the students.  Ask students to describe the land around these rivers.  Questions to consider are:  What other geographic features are around these rivers that could affect settlement?  By looking at the map, do you think people could have settled there?

  

·         Materials:

Þ       Overhead with maps of world, Asia, Africa and each river.

 

·         Assignments:

Þ     Find a major city in America that is located on a river and be prepared to discuss why people were able to settle there in class on day 2.
