Subject Information

Title of Theme:  “Life-Altering Experiences”

Title of Unit: "History and Literature of the Holocaust"

This particular theme will examine both the history and literature of time periods that are abstract for many of today's students. In regards to the unit itself, I feel thatthis particular course of study is important to ensure that as a society, and as contributors to a global community, we do not let the Holocaust happen again.

Grade Levels/Abilities:

This particular unit is taught to 12th grade seniors in a college-preparatory world literature class.

Theme:

Unit is to be arranged chronologically and thematically to fit into a larger consideration of  "world literature". Materials will focus on both fiction and non-fiction sources of information  regarding the Holocaust and supplementary films. In terms of other thematic units based on this concept, other topics of literature to consider can be taught in the following order:

the effect of colonization on Africa (examining Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe); arranged marriages in Hindu cultures (using Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya); the influence of myth on modern China (using The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan); and the influence of political/religious organizations on Middle East culture (using My Forbidden Face by Latifa).
