series of six assignments providing an opportunity to assess informally
personal insights into the history of Japan as derived from course materials
presented during the semester.
WEB ASSIGNMENTS: a
set of five illustrated lectures reviewing the historical development
of traditional Japanese culture and civilization, the series prefaced
by a Visual Literacy Exercise designed to enhance the student's overall
viewing experience.
QUIZ QUESTIONS: a
series of five questions designed to encourage synthesis of course materials
in the production of a set of brief analytical essays.
ESSAY ASSIGNMENTS:
two required
essays on the literary works assigned as course reading material (coupled
with a pair of related Journal Assignments).
OPTIONAL ASSIGNMENTS: descriptions
of course - related opportunities to visit a museum exhibition of Japanese
screens or watch a Japanese film, write up your observations of the experience
and thereby add to the "point total" used in the final
calculation of your course grade.
