NOTE that, unless prior arrangements have been made, late assignments will not be accepted after the due date listed in the COURSE SCHEDULE. 

JOURNAL ASSIGNMENTS: a series of seven assignments providing an opportunity to assess informally personal insights into the history of Early Modern Japan as derived from course materials presented during the semester. 

WRITING SKILLS ASSESSMENT PROJECT: a short essay tied to Journal Assignment One and designed to demonstrate mastery of basic writing skills needed for success in the course.

WEB ASSIGNMENTS: a visual literacy exercise and a set of five illustrated lectures reviewing the historical development of traditional Japanese culture and civilization. 

RESEARCH ESSAY ASSIGNMENTS: two required essays, one based on assigned materials and the second on a topic of the student's own choice.

OPTIONAL ASSIGNMENTS: descriptions of course - related opportunities to watch a Japanese film, write up your observations of the experience and thereby add to the "point total" used in the final calculation of your course grade.
