HIS 374 / 574
REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS IN MODERN CHINA

JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT TWO

(DUE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2000)

Having examined in some detail the nature of traditional Chinese civilization, culture and history as manifest during the Qing Dynasty, where would you anticipate the major areas of conflict to develop between China and the expansionist imperialist powers of the West?  Was China at all experiencing the process of modernization before the arrival of the West in the middle of the nineteenth century or was the challenge of the West necessary to prompt change?  Were such external challenges necessary or would China have successfully "modernized" on her own without outside interference?  How might the fact that Qing China was controlled and ruled by Manchu "barbarians" have on relationships between China and the nations of the West?

This site has been prepared by Lee A. Makela (l.makela@csuohio.edu) for the use of students at Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, who are enrolled in HIS 374 / 574, REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS IN MODERN CHINA during the Spring Semester of the 1999 - 2000 Academic Year; please contact him with any comments.
