HIS 374 / 574
REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS IN MODERN CHINA

COURSE EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE

Answers to these questions will help the instructor determine ways to improve the course.

Print out the questionnaire, use the questions as a guide and submit your responses together with Journal Assignment Five (both are due Wednesday, May 2, 2001).

SUBJECT MATTER

Which subject matter areas would you like to see expanded in future offerings of the course?

Introduction to the Course
(currently, 3 sessions)
Imperial China -- the Traditional Base
(13 sessions)
The Road to Revolution (5 sessions)
The Attempt to Establish a Republic
(9 sessions)
The Rise of Chinese Communism
(3 sessions)
China Under Communism (10 sessions)
Concluding the Course of Study
(4 sessions)

Within the above categories, what specific topics currently covered in the course of study (or not addressed at all) would you like to see expanded (or added)?

COURSE AND ASSIGNMENT- RELATED ISSUES

Should the current mix of lecture / discussion, role-playing exercises, journal and reading assignments be maintained or altered? If changed, in what way? Should the number of CHINAline conferences be expanded? If so, what topical focus should they address?

Did the Writing Skills Assessment Survey assignment provide an appropriate indication of the level of writing skills demanded by the course? Should future students be asked to complete more essay assignments or to write longer essays on the topics currently assigned? Should the number of journal assignments be expanded, contracted or left as is?

Were you asked to perform at a level inappropriate to an upper level history course? Was the level of independence required of you appropriate to the subject matter and the level of the course? Evaluate the overall approach the course took to the study of modern Chinese history as a subject of intellectual inquiry.

What was your chosen essay series topic for the quarter? Would you recommend the same topic to future students? Why / why not? Was your CHINAline character a worthwhile subject of investigation? Were sufficient materials available to make that inquiry satisfactory?

THE COURSE INTERNET WEB SITE

Evaluate the utility and convenience of the course Internet web site: Accessibility? Value? Organization? Value of instructor email access? How often visited? New skills acquired as a result? Internet resource use encouraged as a result? Suggestions regarding elements to add (or subtract)?

READING ASSIGNMENT BIBLIOGRAPHIC SUGGESTIONS

Suggested reading for consideration in future course offerings.

Please attach to this form copies of your CHINAline and essay assignment bibliographies for reference by future students.
