HIS 374 / 574
REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS IN MODERN CHINA

WHAT'S NEW ON THE WEB SITE

The items listed below have recently been altered in some significant way or have been added to the site.

  • Because the instructor will not be available during Finals Week, the due date for the final two assignments for the course (the Course Evaluation Survey and Journal Assignment Five) have been moved up to the final day of class, Wednesday, May 2, 2001. (Friday, April 20, 2001)

  • The film "The Gate of Heaenly Peace" has an excellent associated web site including film clips, a copy of the script, supplementary readings and commentary about the controversy the film itself generated at the time of its initial appearance in 1995 -- materials well worth checking out! A site link has therefore been added to the film listing for April 18, 2000. (Monday, April 9, 2001)

  • the due date for the first portion of your extended essay was incorrectly listed on the assignment page itself (although correctly listed in the course schedule); the corrected due date is Monday, March 5, 2001. (Wednesday, February 5, 2001)

  • I have added to the web site a copy of the PRELIMINARY WORKING BIBLIOGRAPHY on Women Revolutionaries in China, 1840 - 2000, (already distributed in class) to the material discussing Essay Assignment One as an example of what should be provided in this regard as part of that particular assignment. (Friday, February 16, 2001)

  • The January / February issue of Foreign Affairs contains a fifty page article drawn from the pages of the new book The Tiananmen Papers (New York: PublicAffairs, 2001); you can access an online copy of excerpts from the article by going to the Course Schedule listing for Monday, April 23, 2001 in the section on China Under Communism. (Tuesday, Janaury 30, 2001)

  • Several small changes have been made in the course schedule. The Road to Revolution class devoted to an assessment of the Fall of Imperial China (Friday, March 2, 2001) is no longer a Chinaline Conference session; the Monday, March 26, 2001, in examination of The Attempt to Establish a Republic, the class devoted to a consideration of The Failures of Republicanism, on the other hand, is now a Chinaline Conference session. (Tuesday, January 30, 2001)

  • An example of the Writing Skills Assessment Project essay and coversheet has been uploaded to the web site; a copy will also be distributed in class on Wednesday, Janaury 31, 2001. (Monday, Janaury 29, 2001)

  • Grades for Journal Assignment One, CHINALINE Conference assignments and "private discussion groups" related to these assignments have all been added to the password-protected portion of the course web site. (Monday, Janaury 29, 2001)

  • The final series of questions for Journal Assignment One has been expanded (by one question related to our discussion of The Tiananmen Papers on Wednesday, January 24, 2001); be sure to include your response in the assignment due Friday, January 26, 2001. (Wednesday, January 24, 2001)

  • A link to the WRITING SKILLS ASSESSMENT PROJECT has been placed on the ESSAY ASSIGNMENT page to provide easier access to the needed information. (Wednesday, January 24, 2001)

  • The instructor apologizes for missing class on Monday, January 22, 2001. I was busily preparing materials for class distribution when I noticed the time was nearing 11: 30 AM, well after class was scheduled to begin! I guess I have not yet adjusted to having class meet earlier this semester than last.

To compensate, we will compress our consideration of both the "onion" and the "hexagon" into the single session scheduled to take place next Monday, January 29, 2001.

Note that there has been an addition to the course schedule -- the one originally scheduled for today -- and that change has led to the combination of our consideration of physical and historical geography into a single session (now rescheduled for Friday, January 26, 2001 as a result of today's snaffu).

Wednesday, January 24, 2001, we will consider the topic on The Tiananmen Papers originally scheduled for Monday.

The required submission of CHINALINE Conference choices and Journal Assignment One remain as originally scheduled (both due on Friday, Janaury 26, 2001).

    (Monday, January 22, 2001)

  • To resolve the problem everyone is having gaining entry to the password-protected portion of the course web site, after setting up your "myWebCT" page, when working to place "Revolutionary Movements in Modern China" on your page, use YOUR CSU IDENTIFICATION NUMBER as the USER ID and YOUR FAMILY NAME (WITH A CAPITAL FIRST LETTER) as your PASSWORD. The "powers that be" promise me that this will work. (Thursday, January 18, 2001)

This site has been prepared by Lee A. Makela (l.makela@csuohio.edu) for the use of students at Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, who are enrolled in HIS 374 / 574, REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS IN MODERN CHINA during the Spring Semester of the 2000 - 2001 Academic Year; please contact him with any comments.
