HIS 374 / 574
REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS IN MODERN CHINA

CONFERENCE PREPARATION GUIDELINES

You are to prepare for a panel appearance on an American television news program beamed by satellite to the United States from various locations through-out China.

The program centers on in-depth interviews of major participants in the most important news stories of the day. The interviewer will question you in role concerning your character's views on the topic being considered.

In preparing for your appearance, you should assemble the following:

  • a short (one-half page) autobiographical sketch to be used by the interviewer in his panel introductions.
  • The biographical data should include information on both your background (in character) and career highlights (as of the conference date) plus a consideration of why your participation might have been sought out on this particular occasion.

In addition, one paragraph should be devoted to a brief personality profile, describing those personal traits most memorably associated with the character you have been assigned to portray.

  • a brief documented and annotated essay (one and one-half to two and one-half pages in length) setting forth your considered position (in character) on the topic under discussion and your reasons (in character) for taking that position.
The position paper and biographical sketch are due one class session before the scheduled conference and should adhere to expected SUBMISSION CRITERIA. Both will be used, together with your actual panel participation, to determine your grade for the exercise.
