TEACHING ABOUT EAST ASIA

WHAT'S NEW on the WEB SITE ?

The items listed below have recently been altered in some significant way or have been added to the site:

  • The final full version of the Teaching Implementation Plan assignment outline has been uploaded to the seminar web site; a PRINT OUT VERSION is also available. (Friday, April 5, 2002)

  • A review of the Journal Assignments showed an error in assigning due dates that has been corrected on both the Course Schedule and the list of Journal Assignments themselves for those assignments beginning with Journal Assignment Six due Wednesday, March 6, 2002. (Wednesday, February 28, 2002)

  • I have revised the course schedule and reading assignments to more fully integrate seminar expectations with respect to integrating Korea into our considerations. (Friday, February 8, 2002)

  • To make things a bit easier, I have added links to the weekly Journal Assignments to the Course Schedule listings; these links will take you directly to the specific assignment due the Wednesday before each seminar session. (Friday, January 25, 2002)

  • The PASSWORD-PROTECTED portion of the seminar web site is now up-and-running.

To access this material, usually all you will need to do is click on PASSWORD-PROTECTED COURSE MATERIAL on the seminar web site HOMEPAGE (or in the navigation list to the left of any other page). This will take you to a section of the course web site that utilizes WebCT software.

However, to access this portion of the web site you will need to establish WebCT access using a personally-determined USER ID and a PASSWORD. The following section explains how to set this up -- YOU WILL NEED TO FOLLOW THIS PROCEEDURE ONLY ONCE. After that you can access the password-protected course materials simply by entering your USER ID and PASSWORD.

SETTING UP YOUR WEBCT USER ID AND PASSWORD

Once you complete the process described below, you will have established your User ID and Password, set up your my WebCT access page, and added the Freeman Seminar course listing to that page. You will not have to use this process again. Instead simply access your my WebCT page directly for all password-protected course information.

To set up your my WebCT personal access page, first access the main CSU WebCT page in your web browser at:

    http://webct.csuohio.edu

Click on CREATE YOUR MY WEBCT ID and then on the underlined word CREATE that comes up on your browser. Fill in the requested information. Once you have created your My WebCT page, return to http://webct.csuohio.edu to add the seminar to your page.

Click on "Course Listings" to find this course title: "Teaching about East Asia". (You will have to click on "history" first to find the course you are looking for.)

Click on the course title in the course listing to add the seminar to your My WebCT page; you first will be asked to enter your WebCT ID and PASSWORD in the blank spaces provided. These are the ones you just created above.

Click on the course listing again. This time, type in both your INITIAL ID for this seminar and your INITIAL PASSWORD. These both are your FAMILY NAME SPELLED WITH A CAPITAL FIRST LETTER. Hit ENTER to submit. The course listing should now appear on your My WebCT page.

The first time you successfully access the password-protected course materials on the Freeman Seminar Web Site, please take the time to write me another email message. [You can use this same procedure to contact any other member of the class throughout the semester ahead.] Go to the bottom of the page and click on PRIVATE MAIL. Click on the underlined words and an email form will appear. In the column to the left of the screen, click on COMPOSE. Address the note to "INSTRUCTOR", say something nice, sign your name and click SEND. If successfully transmitted, this message will give me a sense of how many participants have been able to get "online" in this part of the web site, alert all of us to any potential problems and, hopefully, will encourage you to email me often during the course of the seminar.

Notice that you can change your password for this portion of the web site by clicking on CHANGE PASSWORD under GENERAL TOOLS.

If you sign in to the password-protected portion of the web site at any time during your current online session, you can always return without having to reenter your sign-in information.

BE SURE TO CLOSE BOTH THE BROWSER AND WINDOWS95/98 at the end of any session using a public-access computer to avoid other people using your identity on the course web site. (Monday, February 7, 2000)

This site has been prepared by Lee A. Makela for the use of teachers enrolled in the Freeman Seminar at Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, between January and March 2000; please contact him by email with any comments at l.makela@csuohio.edu.
