Field Notes: Japan 2005

SHICHI-GO-SAN

During the month of November proud parents (often accompanied by proud grandparents) bring three, five and seven year old children to various local Shinto shrines throughout Japan to receive a special blessing from the local priests.

Since the kids are usually dressed to the nines in a wide variety of fancy dress costumes, the excursions make for a photographer's dream -- as the following snapshots amply illustrate!
