The living quarters for the Horyuji monks.

A roofed corridor surrounds the main set of buildings in the Horyji complex; much of the wood used in its construction is original, dating back to the sixth century! Historians speculate that only priests and monks, not common worshippers, entered the enclosed compound; most likely stood under the roofed entrance gate to pray and make their offerings.
