ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT

Kanazawa was a wealthy enough castletown during its traditional heyday to support two different entertainment areas given over to teahouses and other pleasure houses. The preserved traditional streetscape of the Western Quarter is one of the nicest in Japan -- and the teahouse we visited here had one of the most attractive tsubo ("pot gardens") I have ever seen, its setting in the midst of the structure surrounded by rooms overlooking its serenity successfully integrating this little bit of nature into the surrounding urban landscape.
