the Rainbow Bridge from Odaiba, Tokyo (2001)

Shinagawa skyscrapers and train lines, Tokyo (2001)

To reach Odaiba, one takes a monorail from Shinagawa across the lower deck of the Rainbow Bridge crossing over the Sumida River at the point it enters Tokyo Bay. The ride itself is worth the trip!

Once it crosses the bridge, the monorail line winds through a complex of amazing structures, including luxury hotels, apartment buildings, highrise offices, a convention center, several shopping malls and entertainment centers, automobile showrooms, even a beach resort!

The most amazing building of all belongs to Fuji TV -- its exterior escalators, flying saucer observation deck and open work silvered structural design are truely awe inspiring!

Not surprisingly, Odaiba has become one of Tokyo's "hottest" spots to hang out, shop, or take a date. (Don't you just love the display of kid's pants in the shop scene below?) To me it epitomizes as well the city's future direction as Japan leaps unhesitatingly into the new millenium.
