TOKOJI OBAKYU ZEN TEMPLE

The Obakyu sect of Zen Buddhism came to Japan in the seventeenth century, five hundred years after the two major Zen sects (Rinzai and Soto) were imported from China. Throughout the Tokugawa period (1600 - 1868) it maintained close ties to the mainland -- temple abbotts, for example, were Chinese and many Chinese worship practices from the Ming dynasty were followed. Today Obakyu Zen temple complexes often are frequented by Japanese visitors in search of the exotic!
