Our tour began in Tokyo where we stayed in the luxurious Imperial Hotel in the heart of the city. An extended half-day tour took us down the Sumida River by boat and to the observation deck atop the World Trade Center with a visit to Sensoji, a Buddhist temple in Asakusa, thrown in along the way.
I also spent a heady afternoon amidst the twenty-first century marvels of Odaiba, an artificially-created island located at the mouth of Tokyo Bay below the Rainbow Bridge which has recently been developed into a combination convention, entertainment and residential "resort" connected to the mainland by monorail.
As I journeyed around the city, I often found my eye drawn, as has often been the case, to the always fascinating juxtaposition between elements of age-old tradition and products of new millennial thinking, between the concrete jungle and unexpected touches of garden greenery.
