DETERMINING IF YOUR WORK IS CORRECT

This program is designed to allow you to work an exercise and have it checked from the FILE menu or from the keyboard (by pressing <Ctl>+A). If you think that you are done and the program has not responded, try pressing <Ctl>+A. If you are done because you have finished the exercise correctly, the program will tell you so. You will then have to decide whether you want the next number in the exercise set. The next number can be selected from the FILE menu or from the keyboard (by pressing <Ctl>+N).

If you have not done the exercise correctly, it will explain your error and allow you to finish the work. In some more complex exercises, the task may have been broken up into independent portions that are checked individually before going on to the next portion.

Note: The record keeping function keeps track of how many times you press <Ctl>+A. (It does adjust the number for questions with multiple parts.) However, you need not submit the record and instead redo the exercise until you can get through it on the first press.

ENDING THE PROGRAM

Any exercise page can be canceled from the FILE menu or from the keyboard (by pressing <Ctl>+F4) or from the toolbar by clicking .

The whole program can be exited on the homepage from the FILE menu or from the keyboard (by pressing <Alt>+F4) or from the toolbar by clicking .

If you choose another number, you will be shown the record of your work in the exercise set. Double click on the number to which you wish to switch.

In some circumstances, if you quit an exercise prematurely, a warning message will pop up. A warning will also pop up if you chose to go on to the next number after correctly solving the current number but have not yet sent the exercise to the printer. Both warnings allow you to either continue with your choice or to cancel it.

OTHER FEATURES COMMON TO ALL EXERCISE PAGES

Exercise pages have additional common design elements. At the top of the screen are general instructions. These are followed by a statement of the exercise data. (If the statement is longish, then it will appear in a scrolling region. Scroll the text by clicking on the scroll bar to the right, below, or both.) Third appears the exercise work space (with scroll bars if necessary). If there are any special instructions or data, these will appear fourth and last.

In addition to the menu at the top, every exercise screen has a tool bar across its bottom edge.

Exercise pages are color coded.

Screen backgrounds are gray with the instructions appearing on a pale yellow field. Exercise data and regions that you are not to change also appear on a yellow background.

Exercise workspaces appear on a white background. These can be selected or changed by clicking on them once with the mouse.

If there is a down arrow button to the right, click on this. It will drop a list of choices. Make a selection by clicking on it once.

If there is no down arrow button to the right, then when you click on the white field either it will change directly or a cursor will appear. If the latter, then enter the answer from the keyboard.

In other cases you will need to sort or place information on another part of the screen. This is done by dragging and dropping it on that place. To move a datum, click on it with the left mouse button and hold the button down. When this is done, the cursor will change. Then slide (drag) the mouse to the new location and release (drop) the button. The cursor will change back. If the drop point is a possible answer to the question, then the datum will stay there. Otherwise, it will return to its starting point. In other exercises, data is sorted on a table by clicking on the intersection of a column and a row (one direction will hold the data and the other the labels).

Remember: No Answer is checked until you press <Ctl>+A.
