Drag and Drop

This technique is used to sort argument components into premises and the conclusion as well as to draw diagrams. It is central to working both extended arguments and Venn diagrams.

To position a diagram label, click on it with the mouse but keep the button pressed. Then slide the mouse pointer to the location where you want the label and release the button. Notice that as you move the mouse that you also drag the label along with it. As you slide, the cursor will change from an arrow to a CrossHair (cross hair). The intersection of the cross hairs is where the label will wind up when dropped. Releasing the button drops the label on the diagram space.

On screens for separating premises from the conclusion, there is a designated target. The drag cursor will change to a BULLSEYE when you are over the target. To move the argument component to a different label, just drag it there. To move the component off of any label at all, drop it while the drag cursor is a cross hair.

On screens for Venn diagrams, the X-label will remain exactly where it is placed with the mouse. You may drop the X-label anywhere on the diagram so you have to decide where to put it. An X-label that needs to be on the line of a circle should be positioned so that it straddles the line; so that corners on the X-label are on both sides of the line. Thus, the intersection of the cross hairs should be on the line before dropping the X-label. To move an X-label entirely off of the diagram, drop it outside the Venn circles.

On screens for extended arguments, the circle may move slightly when it is dropped since only certain screen positions can hold a circle. The circle will center itself on the intersection of the dotted target guide lines. So, to position a circle exactly where you want it, move the intersection of the drag cursor cross hairs over a dotted intersection before letting go. To place one circle next to another, drop the second on the first. Joint premises (conclusions) are expected to be on the same row of the diagram. Thus, place the first circle and then drop its partners on it so that they line up.
