Terms

A TERM is a word or phrase that can serve as the subject of a sentence. It usually names an object or person. A NONTERM names a nonthing, an activity, a property, or a relationship.

Each term can properly be modified by some adjectives and not by others. For example, a car can be red or loud but can not taste sweet. An ATTRIBUTE of a term is what an adjective names. In this exercise each adjective is best used with only one term. If LogicCoach rejects one of your answers it is because there is a better answer.

A general term names or denotes many specific items. For example, HUMAN names TOM, MARY, and each of us.

The EXTENSION of a term consists of the objects that it denotes. The INTENSION of a term consists of the attributes of the objects.

Families of related terms consist of different terms all of which have some attributes in common such as HUMAN, ADULT, and PROFESSOR.

Since ALL PROFESSORS ARE ADULTS (and the terms have different extensions), ADULT has a wider extension but a narrower intension than PROFESSOR. PROFESSOR has all of the attributes of HUMAN plus additional ones such as EDUCATED. Thus, PROFESSOR has a broader intension than HUMAN.
