Writing in Electrical and Computer Engineering

Communication is one of the most important yet least appreciated aspects of engineering. You can do the best work in the world, but if you can’t communicate it to anyone, then what is the point? The purpose of this class is to teach students how to communicate the results of their technical work. We will primarily emphasize written communication, and secondarily oral communication.

Communication, like any other skill, requires time and practice. If you want to become a good communicator, then read, write, and speak. If you want to become an excellent communicator, then read, write, and speak even more.

·         Contract - Students enrolled in EEC 414/503 must be concurrently enrolled in any content-based ECE course. After registering for EEC 414/503, students must obtain a written agreement certifying that the instructor of the content-based course will serve as a grader for the report writing required in EEC 414/503.

·         Plagiarism means presenting someone else’s words or ideas without proper attribution. Plagiarism is a huge problem in engineering communication. The engineer has the responsibility not only to be correct technically, but also to correctly give credit to the work of others. For that reason, all the papers that are handed in for this class are required to be submitted via www.turnitin.com, which checks for plagiarism. This allows the student to recognize plagiarism, and rewrite and resubmit papers as needed.

·         My technical report template provides a lot of advice on writing.
