Reading Preparations

Below are some questions to prepare, prior to class. Turn them in at the start of class.
These will be expanded during the semester.

How to Read a Book
When you read, start the process of comprehension by reading for argument. Notice topic sentences and topic paragraphs, and by all means read introductions and conclusions. What are the large points and the smaller points? How do they fit together?

Next, read for details. How does the author make his/her point? Who are the major actors; what are the major events; which organizations matter; what stories does the author tell? What sources does the author use?

Finally, take notes.Write those anecdotes down with your reflection on them. Be specific with page numbers so that your notes are useful for class discussion. Create an outline with major arguments and supporting claims.
