Course Selections
The Arts in an Urban Landscape
Students will examine the wide variety of arts found in urban Cleveland including the study of sculptures, architecture, painting and landscape design. They will design a public mural expressing their
understanding of the Cleveland community and its diverse ethnic and cultural characteristics.
Theatre Performance Developing performance skills in a wide variety of areas. Sessions on
improvisation, voice, movement, and character and scene building, for TV or theatre.
Stepping into Space in the Twenty-First Century Students will investigate principles of motion, aeronautics,
propulsion, astronomy, and starfield navigation that are involved in space travel. They will study the effects of space travel on the human body and learn to use computers and graphing calculators to analyze the
data they collect.
Science for Enriching Urban Lifestyle Students will explore the geology and ecology of urban environments with emphasis on their relevance to such societal problems as air
and water pollution and land use. Air and water tests will be conducted with students collecting and analyzing data.
Creative Writing Through a variety of mediums (short stories, poetry, song,
etc.) students will explore, generate, interpret, and process the issues surrounding race, racism, and all types of discrimination permeating our society, community, politics, families, schools, and the like.
Students will create their own pieces of creative writing such as poetry, short stories, song, persuasive, and descriptive writing and then put them together to create and “Our Story.” An “Our Story” is a
collection of writings that will describe the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of each student surrounding the topics of race and racism.

History of African Music Through lecture, demonstration, and
hands on instruction students will begin to understand the influence of African music on the world musical landscape. Students will learn about the direct link between Rock and Roll and African rhythms.
Students will receive lectures on Reggae music and its possible impact for social change. Students will also learn about the importance of African music as the foundation for Latin music.
Program
Highlights The "Urban Odyssey" program was designed with a focus on the urban environment of Cleveland, incorporating its past, present, and future. Course selections include explorations
of the cultural, political, scientific, artistic, and technological aspects of the urban environment using the resources of the Cleveland area as a classroom. Students share their experiences in each of
five strands, covering liberal arts and math/science areas. This program is a summer day program for commuting students who have completed the 9th or 10th grade during the 2002-2003 school year. The "Urban Odyssey" is designed to meet the needs of students exhibiting demonstrated academic ability and/or achievement in special talent areas. Students attending the program will be engaged in an enriched educational experience in an academic area of their choice.
