 Overview

Main theme of this course is "cluster computing," also called PC Cluster, NOW (Network of Workstations), PoPC (Pile of PC), or CLUMP (Cluster of SMPs).

With the advent of inexpensive high speed switches with ubiquitous PCs and workstations, cluster computing becomes the most cost-effective way of parallel computing. Applications encompass computational science and engineering systems as well as Internet/Web servers.

However, we face challenges due to the peculiarities inherent to the cluster computing, which include distributed memory architecture and irregularity in interconnected network.

In this course, we introduce the backgrounds on parallel computing and study the challenges and their solutions for successful cluster systems. At the end of the semester, you will have concrete understanding of cluster computing and one research paper concentrating on a specific topic.
