 Term Paper

A group of 3-5 students can work together to write a term paper related to wireless network or mobile computing.

  • Schedule (for each milestone, email me before the class on the designated date)
    • Jan. 29 (Tue): Paper topic (and your group)
    • Feb. 19 (Tue): Literature survey and evaluation tool setup (10%)
      • Cover at least 6 related papers or book chapters.
      • Write two-page summary of the literature survey and one-page report on evaluation tool setup. The survey should include the followings. (i) Major contribution of the papers. (ii) Strengths of the papers. (iii) Weaknesses of the papers. (iv) Suggestions for improvements.
      • Prepare in Microsoft Word.
    • Apr. 2 (Tue): Problem definition and Your solution/methodology (20%)
      • Prepare in Microsoft Word, Less than 5 pages
      • This interim report should (i) state the problem, (ii) summarize previous work in the field, (iii) propose a new solution, and (iv) presents the planned evaluation methodology.
    • Apr. 30 (Tue): Final report (40%) & Presentation (30%, peer review)
      • Prepare in Microsoft Word (max. 10 pages) / PowerPoint (10 minutes)
      • The final report should (i) state the problem, (ii) summarize previous work in the field, (iii) propose a new solution, (iv) compare your solution with existing solutions and (v) analyze the evaluation results (simulation or analysis).
  • Tools
    • One of the first few steps in research is to have a tool ready - whether it is analytic modeling, simulation tool or experimental setup. For analytic modeling, strong background on queueing theory and/or combinatorial theory is required. For simulation, ns-2 or GloMoSim is used for simulating mobile networking. SimpleScalar is widely used in (mobile) architecture simulation. SimplePower, Wattch, and SimpleScalar-Arm Power are derived simulators with power measurements. MiBench Embedded Benchmark Suite is also useful to evaluate embedded architectures.
    • For the term paper, you will need to use SUN workstations in Computer Lab in Stilwell Hall. You can also use the workstations from a remote location via "ssh window client" application. You can obtain the software (SSHWinSecureShell24.exe) via anonymous ftp from "fenn.csuohio.edu". For security reason, "telnet" is not allowed. Your login name is your 7 digit Viking ID and the password is the birth date + last two digits of ZIP code in the MMDDYYZZ format. It is recommended to change your password.
  • Suggested topics
    • Implemetation of a multicast protocol in ns-2 simulator
    • Simulation comparsion between ns-2 and GloMoSim
    • Large-scale MANET [52,55]
    • Optimal beacon placement for energy conservation [40,42,43]
    • MANET routing performance with power-save mode operation [40,50,51,54]
    • MANET multicasting performance with power-save mode operation [30,40,51,54]
    • Hierarchical structure of MANET for energy-aware operation [28,40,44,45,47]
    • How much is old information in route cache or routing table in MANET useful?
    • Interoperability between Mobile IP and MANET [34,35]
