The essays in this issue explore the social
history of Cleveland during the 19th century using coroner's investigations as their point of entry. Each of these cases involves members of Cleveland's emerging African-American community. Complementing these are essays exploring the Black History Archives of the Western Reserve Historical Society and the use of maps as historical documents.
