Sound for Film Workshop

What is Picture This? A two-year series of activities in support of regional filmmaking education, funded by the President's Initiative Fund program (a partnership of the Cleveland Foundation, the George Gund Foundation and Cleveland State University). Year 2 (2004-2005) includes a series of film education workshops, a short screenplay competition, the development of a filmmakers resource website in collaboration with Greater Cleveland's Film Commission, and the production of the short film, Fear Comes to Paxton Street.

Sound for Film

Get plenty of hands-on experience as you learn about the current trends for recording sound for film and in post-production studios. Spend a half-day examining the latest microphones, mixers, wireless technologies, electronic slates and recording decks and devices. Spend the other part of the day learning the business of sound recording for film. On day two, spend a half of a day doing location sound, and the second half learning the Art of Foley. The third day is an intensive introductory Pro-Tools audio workshop. The workshop is limited to 15 people.

About the instructor: Marlowe Taylor, M.F.A., has won awards and been recognized nationally for his accomplishments in sound recording and as a studio engineer. He has worked with noted filmmakers, television directors like Stan Lathan, and musicians like Snoop Dog on numerous films, documentaries and audio projects. Taylor owns and operates a private commercial recording studio, Studio 76, a premier audio studio in Cleveland.


The workshop may be taken for academic credit or noncredit. For academic credit, Cleveland State students may enroll in Communication 200, "Sound for Film," a 2-credit course.
